Composer Richard M. Sherman, Who Wrote Disney Classics Like 'Mary Poppins' and 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,' Dies at 95

Academy Award-winning songwriter and Disney legend Richard M. Sherman has passed away at the age of 95.

Sherman, along with his brother Robert B. Sherman, was responsible for some of the most iconic and beloved songs in film history, including "Chim Chim Cher-ee," "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," and "It's a Small World."

Born in New York City in 1928, Sherman began his career as a songwriter in the early 1950s. He and his brother joined forces in 1958 to write songs for the Disney film "Darby O'Gill and the Little People." The success of that film led to a long and fruitful collaboration with Disney, which included such classics as "Mary Poppins" (1964), "The Jungle Book" (1967), and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" (1968).

Sherman's songs are known for their catchy melodies, clever lyrics, and timeless appeal. He and his brother were awarded two Academy Awards for Best Original Song, for "Chim Chim Cher-ee" from "Mary Poppins" and "It's a Small World" from the 1964 World's Fair.

In addition to his work with Disney, Sherman also wrote songs for other films, television shows, and Broadway musicals. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005.

Sherman's death is a great loss to the world of music and entertainment. His songs have brought joy to generations of children and adults alike, and his legacy will continue to live on through his timeless compositions.
