Freedom To Vote Act Passed

Freedom to Vote Act: What You Need to Know

A Comprehensive Voting Rights Bill

The Freedom to Vote Act (FTVA) is a sweeping piece of legislation that aims to address a wide range of voting issues, including voter registration, voting access, election integrity and security, redistricting, and campaign finance.

The Need for FTVA

The FTVA comes at a time when voting rights are under attack in many states. In 2021, 43 states introduced restrictive voting bills, and 18 states passed such laws. These laws have made it harder for people to register to vote, cast a ballot, and have their votes counted.

Key Provisions of FTVA

The FTVA includes a number of provisions to protect and expand voting rights, including:

*
  • Automatic voter registration
  • Early voting
  • No-excuse absentee voting
  • Same-day voter registration
  • Independent redistricting commissions
  • Campaign finance reform

Congressional Action

The FTVA was first introduced in the Senate in 2021, but it failed to pass. Democrats attempted to pass it again in January 2022 as part of a combined bill with the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, but it was again defeated.

The future of the FTVA is uncertain, but it remains a top priority for Democrats. If it is passed, it would be a major victory for voting rights advocates.
